The visual display unit (1) is complemented by a three-dimensional display controller (2) and an input unit (3) for movements in two spatial coordinates (A, B). The controller can be switched between two modes. In the first, it moves the image with respect to the first and second coordinates. In a second mode it moves the image in accordance with a third display coordinate. The input unit includes mode change switches (5, 6). A partial image (a) is displayed for the left eye (L), another (b) for the right (R) eye of the observer. The display screen (E1) is extended over two coordinate axes, and the third axis is normal to it. Movement of the image along the third axis is displayed by varying the spacing between images (a, b) in the display plane, or their sizes are varied. The input unit is constructed so that movements can be imposed in only two axes. The controller effects three-dimensional display of a further image, with respect to which the image can be moved. An independent claim is included for the corresponding method of display.
