Devices regulate flow of coolant in a fuel cell stack. During the stack's cold start, controllers/valves (3,4) allow a flow through only part of the available cells (7) in the stack. This provokes an electrochemical reaction relatively quickly and generates a reaction heat. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling cold start behavior in a fuel cell stack.
