The sliding door (1) for a motor vehicle (12) is movable along a guide (11), and a locking device (2) interacts with the sliding door to lock it in optional positions along the guide. A control unit (3) interrogates signals from an activating sensor (4) and through evaluating of these signals either activates or deactivates the locking device. The activating sensor is provided in or on the sliding door, such as in a handle (5), and senses the proximity of an operator. An independent claim is included for a motor vehicle equipped with a sliding door as specified in the description of the invention.
