The heat engine has pistons in a working cylinder, namely a working piston and the control piston. The working piston is in the form of a master piston (2), and a control piston is in the form of slave piston (3). The master piston and a slave piston, and also the cylinder (1) are of a rectangular cross-section. There are annular chambers (6, 7) at the outer circumference of the cylinder, in which the heat exchange medium flows.
