A manual chopper, especially for composting material has a flat work surface (1) on a support frame and with a fixed cutting edge (8) mounted a short spacing from the edge of the surface. A chopping blade (11) is pivot mounted guillotine fashion in the slot between the work surface and the fixed blade. For right handed use the chopper is at the right hand side of the work surface superimposing a lateral right handed thrust onto the blade, pushing it against the fixed blade for efficient chopp8ng with reduced risk of material jamming between the blades. Both the fixed and movable blades have cutting edges with the fixed edge a few millimetres lower than the work surface. A foot plate (22) fixed to the bottom of the frame stabilises the chopper.
