The machine has a container feed channel(4) and a pair of rolls(7,8) formed by a body with radial perforating spikes(11). Roll axes(12,13) are parallel and a compression and perforating gap(14) is created between the rolls in the feed channel. The rotation paths(16,17) of the spikes overlap each other in the gap when viewed in the roll axis direction. Perforating spikes(11) are fixed in rows on both rolls(7,8), the rows on one roll being offset axially from those on the opposing roll. Perforation spikes converge to a point over at least half and preferably two thirds of their length and have a thickness of not less than20%, preferably not less than40% of the length of the converging section. The rolls are cylindrical and mandrels are individually screwed into the outer surface. Spikes are of a harder material than the outer surface of the roll. One roll moves relative to the other to vary the perforating gap(14). Springs(30,31) press the rolls towards each other. An independent claim is included for a perforation spike for the machine.
