A method for numerically modelling a yarn has the steps of: (1) obtaining data of yarn length and thickness; (2)creating a three dimensional map of the yarn surface; (3) identifying points on the surface; (4) calculating position vectors for the points and their orientation vectors. Also claimed is: (1) a computer program for numerically modelling a yarn; (2) a method for numerically modelling an actual fabric; (3) a computer program for numerically modelling an actual fabric.
