The procedure involves storing of signals representing friction and slipping characteristics of vehicle tires (10, 12, 14, 16) on the ground, in a memory housed in the tires. The probability of the instability of the vehicle due to dissymmetry of the mounting of the tires is also taken into account. A control unit (42) receives the signals for controlling a steering unit (44) that is connected to a braking unit and an engine. An independent claim is also included for a control device for a steering unit of a motor vehicle.
