The method involves determining a stop position of a steering wheel (5), and tightening or loosening a brake (20) depending on the position of the steering wheel with respect to the stop position. The stop position is determined using a predefined formula that depends on position of the steering wheel at that time, maximum locking angle of wheels (15) and locking angle of the wheels (15) at that time. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a steer-by-wire system (b) a motor vehicle.
