A novel gas detector, having first and second ends, comprises a hollow cylindrical casing (10) having a collar (100) extending radially from the external periphery of the casing, a detection element fixed in the casing and a heat conduction blocking element (2) on the first end (101) of the collar. An independent claim is included for a method for mounting a gas detector on an exhaust pipe (3), involving inserting a gas detector as above, having a washer (102) located on a first end of the conduction blocking element, into a mounting hole (30) formed in the exhaust pipe, such that the washer and blocking element are between the pipe and the collar.
