The detection element comprises first and second electrochemical cells. A very large zone impermeable to ions is integrated into the solid electrolyte in the detector element to deviate an ion flow which develops between the electrodes of the first cell away from the electrodes in the second cell. The very large zone is an electrically isolating layer (30, 32) preferably of aluminum oxide, with the solid electrolyte covering its two large faces. The isolating layer encloses one of the electrodes of the second electrochemical cell in the form of a hollow body, open at one side. The very large zone is a cavity in the detector element filled with a gaseous mixture or atmosphere of reference gas. This zone is at least partially between one of the electrodes in the first cell and one of the electrodes in the second cell. There are two large zones which are impermeable to ions and one of the electrodes of the second cell is placed mostly between their two large surfaces. Lines connecting the electrodes in the first cell which intersect one of the electrodes of the second cell or its direct environment are interrupted by the very large impermeable zone.
