Diver-worn acoustic interrogator-transponder device for locating another diver

A device for locating underwater objects, particularly scuba divers in an emergency, comprises an interrogator (transmitter, loudspeaker), a transponder, a receiver having an arrangement of microphones and a microprocessor. The device is integrated into a compact water-resistant housing, worn by each diver. When searching for a second diver, the first diver pushes a button on his device which emits a pulse or pulses of acoustic energy, preferably within the audible range. The transponder on the device worn by the second diver responds with a response acoustic signal, which is received by the microphones on the first diver's device, and the microprocessor calculates the direction of the second diver based on propagation time differences. The location of the diver may be indicated on a display. Only a small amount of current is consumed during normal operation, as the transmitter is only operated in an emergency.
