A process for obtaining 1 ,3-diols from the phenolic acids of natural long chain phenolic lipids by reduction of the carboxyl group to the hydroxymethyl group. Preferred 1,3-diols include anacardic alcohol, isoanacardic alcohol and anagigantic alcohol. Preferred sources of natural phenolic lipids include Anacardium occidentale, Anacardium giganteum, Pistacia vera, and Pentaspadon species. Alternatively, a process of complexation and recovery of boric acid using 1,2-diols derived from Rhus vernicifera, Rhus toxicendron, Rhus succedanea, Melanorrhea usitata, Semecarpus heterophyla, Gluta renghas, Semecarpus vernicifera. Preferred 1 ,2-diols include urushiol and thitsiol. The 1,3-diols and 1,2-diols are used for the complexation, solvent extraction and recovery of borates and boric acid from natural lakes. These processes can be improved by the use of trioctylmethylammonium as an adjunct.
