A device comprises a pulley wheel mounted on a supporting plate 6, the axis of rotation of the pulley wheel being in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the plate B6/B, a cover B5/B mounted on the pulley on the opposite side to the plate B6/B and a releasable rope engaging mechanism B3/B. A rope channel B4/B is located along one side of the plate B6/B. The releasable mechanism B3/B may be in the form of a cam pivotally mounted on the plate B6/B, the free end of the cam being received within the rope channel B4/B. A first rope may be reeved on the pulley and a second rope bearing a load may be received within the rope channel B4/B. The device allows for a pulley system to the attached at any point along the second rope and the device is for use in recovering injured persons working at height or during leisure activities such as climbing or potholing.
