A communications system comprises a light source 18 and a controlling operation thereof so as to cause the light source 18 to flicker at a frequency sufficiently high to be invisible to the human eye whilst permitting data to be transmitted thereby. The data may represent one or more operating characteristics of the device 10. The device 10 may be a washing machine or similar domestic appliance, eg. dish washer, tumble dryer, shower, television, video, hi-fi system, etc.
