PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism capable of easily converting a chinese document written in simplified characters into a document of a format that can be understood even by a Japanese without carrying out a complicated linguistically interpretative process. PSOLUTION: When document data of a document written in Chinese is inputted, a character code of a simplified character included in the document data is converted into a character code of a Japanese Kanji or a complex character having the same meaning, and a converted document obtained by converting the character codes is outputted. When there is a plurality of Japanese Kanjis or complex characters having the same meaning, the plurality of Kanjis or complex characters is outputted as a substitution candidate character group.
