PROCESSING DEVICE FOR BRITTLE MATERIAL USING ELASTIC TOOL AND PROCESSING METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a processing device for a brittle material using an elastic tool and a processing method by which processing for forming a sphere high in sphericity with a small variation in diameter can be easily executed without the occurrence of chipping and cracking to ball blanks composed of a brittle material such as glass used to require a long period of time for forming it into a complete sphere by conventional processing.;SOLUTION: The device is composed such that a groove 4 is concentrically provided respectively to opposite faces of a rotary disk 2 and a fixed disk 1 facing each other, the ball blanks B are put between the grooves, and the ball blanks B are polished by rotating the disk 2. A fixed load is applied to the ball blanks by properly absorbing and relaxing a strong/weak fluctuating load applied to the ball blanks B with the rotation by making the opposite face of either of the rotary disk 2 and the fixed disk 1 as an elastic body.
