PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmitting module and an optical transmitting and receiving module using an EA (electro-absorption) modulator which requires no controlling mechanism to keep the EA modulator at a constant temperature and which achieves stable ACER (alternating current extinction ratio) without depending on the operational temperature.;SOLUTION: The EA modulator has such a structure that an optical waveguide comprising a multilayer film is formed on a substrate, an electric signal is applied in the direction perpendicular to the substrate onto the optical waveguide to vary the absorbed quantity of input light to control the quantity of output light. The structure includes a plurality of p-side electrodes 108, 109 which are arranged, as each electrically separated, on the optical axis of active layer optical waveguides 111, 112 and apply an electric signal on the active layer optical waveguides 111, 112, and the length of the optical waveguide region where the electric signal is applied is changed by increasing or decreasing the number of the p-side electrodes 108, 109 to apply an electric signal in accordance with temperature.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
