PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retrieval method, a retrieval device, and a recording medium for retrieval by which an unknown polymer sample can be easily identified. ;SOLUTION: An unknown polymer sample is pyrolyzed by a pyrolyzing means 2, and then, the pyrolyzed products are separated with a separation column 4. Each the separated pyrolyzed product is ionized by a mass spectrometer 5 every prescribed time so that molecular ions and fragment ions are generated, while detection data are created by detecting strengths of the generated molecular ions and the fragment ions. The detection data are added up every set of the detection data by a personal computer 6 so that total ion strengths are obtained. A chromatogram is created on the basis of the total ion strengths. The detection data, which are included in the total ion strength corresponding to each peak of the chromatogram, are added up every ion having an equal mass so that an added-up mass spectrum of the unknown polymer sample is obtained. Added-up mass spectra of plural known polymer samples are obtained by the same method as the unknown polymer so that a database is created on the basis of them. The added-up mass spectrum of the known polymer sample, which has a high rate of accordance with the added-up spectrum of the unknown polymer sample, is retrieved out from this database.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
