PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a heat storage material the phase transition temperature of which can be optimized according to heat storage conditions conforming to the conditions of heat demand and a heat source temperature, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: There are provided [1] a heat storage material based on magnesium sulfate hexahydrate and magnesium chloride hexahydrate, wherein the rate of the magnesium chloride hexahydrate is at most 20% of the total weight of the magnesium sulfate hexahydrate and the magnesium chloride hexahydrate and [2] a method for producing a heat storage material, wherein the rate of the magnesium chloride hexahydrate is adjusted within a range of at most 20% of the total weight of the magnesium sulfate hexahydrate and the magnesium chloride hexahydrate according to the target phase transition temperature of the heat storage material.
