The manipulation/massage apparatus is positionable above a single or double bed (18) where a human body is given treatment by a horizontal rail in a casing over which an arm runs in the longitudinal direction of the body in which a small carriage can move over the entire length, driven by a step motor (5). In the small carriage is a pulley (8) driven by the step motor on which a nylon wire (9) or similar is wound which can freely move over the length direction. The wire can be rolled and unrolled in a groove (12) in the under side of the arm and at its outer end is a coupling for connection of auxiliary pieces (15) or an infra red heat diffusor. The rolling and unrolling is regulated by two distance sensors (10,11) which are necessary where the auxiliary piece moves unexpectedly through the beam of a sensor and moves upwardly unintentionally. The other sensor then takes over the situation and the distance to the body remains determined. The apparatus is operated by a wire or wireless system, which can be installed manually along the body in accordance with a pre-arranged program. It can be changed to manual operation using a track ball.
