The grip part of the bookrest (14) for securing to a flange (12) on the bookshelf (10) is designed to be engaged with the front and back sides (140, 142) of the flange in different positions along the flange length when a book (16) is leaning against it. The friction between this grip part and the flange prevents the bookrest slipping away from the book. The flange protrudes downward from the shelf and the grip part extends around it. The bookrest has a foot (144) which is connected to the grip part and rests on the shelf. A book support part (148) of the bookrest extends upward from the foot.
