An isolated Apo-2 ligand variant polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence which differs from the native Apo-2 sequence and has a specific amino acid substitution at the residue positions in SEQ ID NO:1 (Figure 1). Also disclosed is an isolated nucleic acid comprising the nucleotide sequence encoding the Apo-2 ligand variant, a vector comprising the nucleic acid and a host cell comprising the vector.
