The invention discloses means and methods for determining whether a tissuesample or an analogue and/or derivativethereof comprises a cell with a chromosome {11:18} translocation associatedwith malignancies such as mucosa-associated lymphoidtissue (MALT) lymphoma's. The invention further provides insight into a novelmechanism of transformation of primary cells. Saidmechanism involving expression of a fusion proteinaceous molecule comprisingat least apoptosis inhibitor 2 (API2) or a functionalpart, derivative and/or analogue thereof fused to at least one otherproteinaceous molecule. The invention also provides a novelnucleic acid sequence and proteinaceous molecule expressed from said sequencetermed MALT-lymphoma associated Translocation(MLT) protein.
