A differentially expanded vascular graft (10) for implantation within a bodyincludes a PTFE tube (12) formed of a homogeneous material. The PTFE tube hasa longitudinal first portion (14) which has been longitudinally expanded, anda longitudinal second portion (16) which has been longitudinally expanded. Thefirst and second portions have respective microstructures which are differentfrom one another. A method and apparatus for making the differentiallyexpanded vascular graft of the present invention facilitates the formation ofthe various expanded portions of the PTFE tube. A quality control mechanismincludes measuring a characteristic of the microstructure and re-expanding thePTFE tube if characteristic is not sufficiently close to a reference.
