The invention relates to a co-ordinate measuring device (10) and to a method for measuring structures using a scanning element (40) with an elongated tip (42) and a scanning moulded element (44) for measuring the structure of an object, in addition to an optical sensor that detects the position of the scanning element or scanning moulded element. According to the invention, the scanning element with the optical sensor can be displaced as a unit in relation to a fixing element of the co-ordinate measuring device. The aim of the invention is to measure micro-characteristics of objects without problems and without the need for a complex construction of the co-ordinate measuring device. To achieve this, the optical sensor and the scanning element (40) are connected as a unit to the fixing element by means of a rotary or pivot joint, or by means of a rotary-pivot joint (32).
