LITHIUM AND POTASSIUM COPOLYSILICATE BARRIER COATINGS

PURPOSE: A silicate-based barrier coating is used for polymeric articles. CONSTITUTION: The polymeric article comprises (a) a polymeric substrate adhering to the surface of a coating layer; and (b) the coating layer containing a lithium-potassium copolysilicate represented by the formula of (Li2O)x(K2O)(1-x)(SiO2)y. In the formula, when x is smaller than 1, y is larger than 4.6; and when y is between 1 and 10, x is larger than 0.5. The polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyester, polyolefin, polystyrene and polyamide. The polyolefin is selected from polyethylene, polypropylene, cycloolefin copolymer and a copolymer thereof. The polyester is poly(ethylene terephthalate). The cycloolefin copolymer is a copolymer of ethylene and norbornene. The polyamide is nylon.
