LITHIUM AND POTASSIUM COPOLYSILICATE BARRIER COATINGS

A method and novel barrier coating solutions are providedfor imparting improved vapor, gas or aroma permeability characteristics to acoated polymeric substrate. The method and solutions employ alithium--potassium copolysilicate of the formula (Li2O)x(K2O)1-x(SiO2)y. Forthemethod, y is between 1 and 10, if x is less than 1; or y is greater than 4.6,if xis 1. For the novel coating solutions, y is greater than 4.6 if x is less than1;or x is greater than 0.5 if y is between 1 and 10.
