The invention relates to a device (51), for the preparation of a bobbin (11), for introduction into a shuttle of a shuttle machine, comprising a housing (53), with a bobbin seat (45) therein, with a seat axis (47) and embodied for housing the bobbin (11), parallel to the seat axis (47). At least one thread opening (55), leading out of the housing (53) from the bobbin seat (45) and a means for guiding the free bobbin thread end of a bobbin (11) on the bobbin seat (45) are further provided. At least one sensor (76) is also provided, which can determine whether a bobbin thread (23) extends through the opening (55). The device also comprises a junction (61), by means of which bobbins (11), which have a bobbin thread (23) detected, are passed on and the others, for which no bobbin thread is detected, can be picked out. On the preparation of bobbins (11) for the shuttles of a knitting machine the following steps are thus carried out: introduction of a bobbin (11) to a bobbin seat (45), search for the bobbin thread (23), extension of the bobbin thread end into a recognition zone (55), recognition of the presence of a thread (23), cutting the bobbin thread and sorting of the bobbins (11). A bobbin (11) for a shuttle on a shuttle machine is thus particularly suitable for such a process when the thread body (21) on the bobbin (11) is secured.
