PURPOSE: Provided are a negative electrode active material and high capacity lithium secondary battery containing the negative electrode active material which has an excellent output density and is improved in energy density. CONSTITUTION: The negative electrode active material comprises a crystalline carbon-based compound and an amorphous carbon-based compound, in the ratio of 80:20 to 20:80. Preferably the crystalline carbon-based compound has an average diameter of 6-20 micrometers; and the amorphous carbon-based compound has an average diameter of 8-25 micrometers, and is at least one selected from the group consisting of a phenol resin or furan resin-pyrolyzed amorphous carbon (hard carbon)-based compound, cokes, and a needle cokes-carbonized amorphous carbon (soft carbon)-based compound.
