Production of a component made from opaque synthetic quartz glass comprises preparing a starting material in the form of a granulate made from synthetic highly pure SiO 2 formed from porous agglomerates of SiO 2 primary particles and having a tamped density of at least 0.8 g/cm 3; introducing the granulate into a mold and melting a pre-form made from opaque quartz glass; and reshaping the pre-form in a hot deformation process forming the component made from quartz glass. Preferred Features: The outer surface of the pre-form is mechanically processed and then fed into a heating zone to soften if and deform it. The SiO 2 granulate has a tamped density of 0.9-1.4 g/cm 3
