The system has a braking unit with a pneumatic brake booster (2) and a master cylinder (4). Pressure chambers of the master cylinder are separable in pairs in brake circuits over air brake system pipes (5, 6). An assisting device is provided in pressurizing medium of a high pressure accumulator (27). Wheel brakes are connected with a low pressure accumulator (24) which is connected with a suction side of the assisting device. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a vehicle brake system.
