The microprocessor (11) has sensor and control connections to each cylinder (Cylinder 1-Cylinder 8) of the internal combustion engine. The cylinder connections enter a microcontroller (17) with two CPU cores (12a,12b). A bus system (13) has a data bus (13a) connected to two read-ahead buffers (15a,15b) in parallel. A control bus (13b,13d) carries a buffer select signal to the read-ahead buffers. An address bus (13c) is connected to directly to a first memory (14a). All three bus lines are directly connected to a second memory (14b).
