The device has a resonator (4), integrated in a vehicle seat (1), having predetermined resonance characteristics during unoccupied seat condition. A detection unit (7) connected with the resonator detects a change in the characteristics, due to occupants of the seat. An evaluator (8) connected with the unit (7) detects the seat occupancy when the change in the characteristics exceeds an assigned threshold. An independent claim is also included for a method of detecting seat occupancy in a motor vehicle.
