The device has electrically conductive surface elements (6.1-9.1, 6.2-9.2) applied on a seat cushion-pad foam part (4) of a seat cushion-pad element (2) and a backrest-pad foam part (5) of a backrest-pad element (3). An evaluation electronics detects surface element change i.e. change of a position in a vehicle seat (1), where the change is produced due to a weight of a vehicle occupant (I). The evaluation electronics computes a seat pressure distribution of the associated pad elements from the change of relative positions between the surface elements. Compression of the pad elements is used. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting occupancy of a vehicle seat.
