A winch system for heavy loads includes a friction winch (9) to take some of the cable tension when lowering heavy loads and thereby ensuring an even layering of the cable on the main winch. The friction winch comprises two drums driven in opposing directions using a hydraulic drive motor linked to the main hydraulic system of the crane, and can be mounted near to the main winch, i.e. near to the ground.
