Production of a flat cover material for use in the construction industry involves forming the product 3-dimensionally by (A) extruding a plastically-deformable adhesive material to form a web (1) on a haulway and contacting on one side with a film material (2); and (B) subjecting the composite to rhythmic movement of a tool edge (21) relative to and immersed in film (2) to give a seersucker effect with edge (21) providing or supporting feed of web (1). An independent claim is also included for the corresponding apparatus comprising (A) an extruder (30) with a wide nozzle (23); (B) following the extruder, a slide device (20) with an edge (21) providing rhythmic movement; (C) a roll (12) positioned above the extrudate (14) and supplying the film material (2); (D) a roll (13) positioned below extrudate (14) and from which one of the protective film strips (15) used in the composite can be drawn off below web (1); and (E) a horizontal conveyor belt (40) leading to a take-off zone (43) and such that section (41) of the belt is aligned with the extrusion direction (14).
