The method involves integrating a heating circuit (4a) and a coolant branches in a cooling system, where the branches are downstream of a thermostat valve (6). Heat is introduced into the valve by closing an additional valve (6bv) in a bypass branch (6b). The thermostat valve upon reaching its nominal temperature operates by opening the additional valve for regulating the flow of cooling medium in the bypass branch. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating cooling and heating circuits of a motor vehicle.
