A simple servo assisted steering system for a vehicle has a direct mechanical train between the steering column/steering wheel (2) and the wheels and with a servo unit (21) to provide an overlaid torque. The steering column is fitted with an overlaid gearing (11), e.g. an epicyclic gearing, and a sensor (12) for steering torque and steering setting. A control module (13) monitors the steering and computes the optimum servo torque, e.g. to control a simple hydraulic ram(21) fitted to one end of a steering rack (20).
