The sensor has a detector unit (104) with a sensor unit for producing a sensor signal in response to a geometric position of an indicator unit with respect to the sensor unit. An indicator unit is mounted on an actuation unit (102) in an end mounted position by a mounting fixture (114), so that the position of the indicator unit is changeable by the actuation unit. The fixture is fixed at the detector unit in a pre-mounted position. An independent claim is also included for a method of mounting a contactless position sensor.
