The seal (2) has a surface (5) contacting the moving sieve belt (4). This configuration largely strips-away the air boundary layer entrained by the sieve. The seal is constructed as a rigid deflector (6) having lower hardness (H) than the sieve. It is brought against the sieve under spring-loading (7). It has a straight-line sealing surface transverse to the direction of sieve running (L). In a variant, it forms a chevron sealing surface pointing against the direction of running. An independent claim is included for a machine for the production or treatment of a fibrous web, especially paper or cardboard, having a seal as claimed.
