The dispenser (10) has two or more assemblies (G 1, G 2), each comprising closely-adjacent strips (L 1-L 3). The strips can be moved independently. Together, two or more strip contours form a depression (16, 17). Each depression holds a workpiece, i.e. a pipe (P). One of the strips (L 1) has a surface (15) along which the pipe can roll or slide. Movement of a strip (L 2, L 3), at or below the level of this surface, initiates controlled movement of a workpiece. The pipe is given over to automatic handling equipment.
