The retractor has a housing, a belt spool provided with a housing, and a blocking mechanism to block the spool in the housing. A delay unit (26) controls a switch-over unit (25) based on a specific time interval e.g. 30-40 milliseconds, where the switch-over unit switches a force limiting unit between two steps. The definite time interval is based on the detection of an accident e.g. frontal crash or a laterally shifted front crash.
