The method involves detecting critical driving conditions of a vehicle, and successively selecting and triggering occupant protection units such as a seat harness (1), a reversible belt tensioner (2), a window lifter (3) and a roof window (4) with respective time intervals (t1-t4) of about 10 to 200 milliseconds, based on the active position and/or the priority of the protection units. The protection units are selected and triggered such that an onboard network voltage and safety-relevant vehicle functions e.g. braking functions, are maintained in the critical driving conditions. The protection units are triggered before or at the time of collision of the vehicle. The critical driving conditions comprise oversteering and understeering. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling an occupant protection unit in a vehicle.
