Coloring of items in the road map image is made a function of their distance from the vehicle. The first region (28) showing topographical information, is separated from a second region (32) by a horizon (30). The blue color component of items is increased with increasing distance from the vehicle. Coloring variation is achieved by alpha-compositing, in which various transparency stages are provided for different distances. Coloring relating to orientation and route is distance-related.
