The apparatus has a cathode (4) and a transmission anode (2). The transmission anode is followed in the radiation direction by a moderator (3) to absorb a given proportion of the X-ray radiation energy, and an aperture (5). The moderator is preferably a solid material containing carbon and having a very high melting temperature. Independent claims also cover a method of generating X-ray radiation.
