A method for determining output torque limits of a powertrain that includes an electrically variable transmission, the method being based on a model of the electrically variable transmission. Electromotive torque limitations, engine torque limitations, and battery power limitations define a transmission operating space. The output torque limits are determined at the limits of the transmission operating room.
