The unit has guide rollers (42, 46) attached to a support (36). The rollers are pressable from opposite sides against a guide rack serving as linear guide for the support. The support has a drive motor (74) with a gear (80) having toothing. The gear is brought in toothed engagement with a toothed rack (32) for guide rails that are connected parallelly and rigidly to the gear. The gear is pressable against the rack by spring force. An independent claim is also included for a material machining device e.g. high-speed or model milling machine.
