Gas pressure is applied to the first side surface (304) of a blank (302) to press a second side surface (306) against a punch surface but not against a cavity surface such that the blank can be shaped from a sheet metal preform configuration to a finish configuration. A sheet is pressed between a punch (334) and a cavity (310) to stretch and shape the blank.
