The method involves detecting characteristic signals of camshafts, and comparing the signals with reference models of the camshaft signals. The presence of a partial or total concordance of the detected camshaft signals with the models permits to deduce the existence of an angular position of the camshafts. The probability with which the angular position is effectively given is also determined. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a device for synchronizing an internal combustion engine (B) computer program with program code products executed on a computer to implement an internal combustion engine synchronizing method (C) data medium or computer system on which a data structure is protected to execute an internal combustion engine synchronizing method after loading in a working memory and/or a main memory of a computer (D) computer program product with program codes to execute an internal combustion engine synchronizing method (E) modulated data signal characteristic of a camshaft of an internal combustion engine containing instructions to execute an internal combustion engine synchronizing method.
